By now you’ve heard that the Gen-Z teens and twenty-somethings have declared skinny jeans are capital-O Out. Trends come and go all the time, but skinny jeans, which rose to popularity in the 2010s, have proven to be reliable wardrobe pieces rather than a passing fad.
That being said, it’s never a bad time to explore new styles and try new things. While I’ll be keeping skinny jeans in my fashion repertoire for many years to come (they’re just so flattering, and what other jean style can you wear with tall boots?) I’m excited to experiment with some new and reinvented denim trends throughout 2021.
If you’re ready to switch things up with your denim, here are 6 trending styles to wear:
1) Bootcut Jeans
Yes, bootcut jeans are officially on-trend again. Unlike the bootcut jeans of the early aughts, which featured hip-hugging waists, the bootcut jean of 2021 features a figure-flattering high waist, as well as a smaller flare than earlier versions.

As the name intends, this style will pair perfectly with your favorite boots. I recommend a pointed toe shape for a modern look.
Inspired by a year of DIY projects in quarantine, the patchwork trend has taken off in the fashion world, not just with denim but with all sorts of clothes. For jeans, designers are creating pieces that mix different denim hues along with cuts of printed fabrics for a vintage patchwork effect.

These Etro patchwork jeans, featuring cuts of blue paisley prints, are absolute statement makers. The raw hem and straight leg silhouette are also of-the-moment jean features.
3) Cut-Out Pockets
Trade in your knee-rip jeans for a cut-out style that shows some skin in a fun new way.

Wear these Maison Margiela jeans with a crop top for a subtle glimpse of skin, or pair with a bodysuit in a contrasting color to showcase the cutouts.
4) 90s Baggy Fit
Go to the polar extreme of the skinny jean with a pair of super baggy 90s-inspired jeans.

The masculine fit of these GANNI x Levi’s jeans looks great when paired with skinny heels and padded shoulder T-shirts.
5) Asymmetric Buttons
Nothing steps a pair of classic jeans up to a new level of style more than an interesting detail, and a fun twist like asymmetric buttons or neat embellishments are so cool.
Get The Look: AGOLDE Criss Cross Upsized Jean
AGOLDE makes so many great jeans, but this criss cross style has been a bestseller for a reason. They’re so good, and I can tell you these jeans will fit your body so well you’ll want to wear them all the time.
6) Tapered Leg
If you still like the basic shape of skinny jeans, a tapered leg style is a good alternative that still offers the same figure-flattering benefits.

I love the paper bag waist and belt detail on these IRO jeans, which will make even a simple white T-shirt look sophisticated.
