When Sheila Fauman’s friends started having children, she struggled to find the perfect gift to give them.

Eager to gift something that would be helpful to new moms, she recalls feeling confused about the products to buy versus those that she should pass on.

Confident that other people were encountering a similar gifting dilemma, she decided to start her own company to make the process easier. And Basic Baby Co. was born.

We recently caught up with the founder of the Vancouver-based firm to learn more:

Q: For those who aren’t familiar, what is Basic Baby Co.?

A: Basic Baby Co. is an online shop specializing in baby gifts and gifts for a new mom. We know that people often don’t know what to get for a new baby or mom, so we offer a simple solution — curated gift bundles that are both thoughtful and practical. Our themed gift bundles are full of the essentials that a new parent actually needs, or customers can choose to build their own gift bundle from our inventory of items. We ship across North America and offer free shipping within Canada. So, even if you can’t be there with your loved one or you are looking for that perfect gift to celebrate a new parent in the office, a Basic Baby Co. gift bundle is a wonderful way to let them know you are thinking of them.

Q: When and why did you first start the company?

A: Basic Baby Co. was launched about 3 1/2 years ago and it is really my lemonade, so to speak. After many years working with clients involved with the criminal justice system and experiencing mental-health issues, I was burnt out. Never mind that I had been through a lot of my own challenges that had left me feeling emotionally depleted and experiencing a lot of anxiety. I am not sure I truly realized it at the time, but I needed a change — I needed to do something that allowed me to be more creative and to do something that was all mine. I had never really envisioned being an entrepreneur, but I guess I just started talking with people and spinning different ideas in my head; and so, the concept of Basic Baby Co. was born. It just felt right. This was also a time in my life when a lot of my friends were having babies and I seemed to be on the endless hunt for baby gifts! Coincidence? Probably not.

Q: What makes it unique from other brands?

A: I think it’s the fact that we really focus on curating gift bundles for babies or new moms that are practical. Tempting as it may be to include a cute little outfit or baby keepsake, we just know that a new parent receives a lot of these types of gifts. By no means does this mean that our products aren’t still super-cute, its just that we really hone in on those items that have great value to and are useful for a new parent and baby.

Q: Who is the target customer?

A: Honestly, someone a lot like me. I often find gift-giving somewhat stressful. I absolutely love giving a gift that I know someone will use and appreciate, but I don’t enjoy buying something just for the sake of giving a gift. Also, I am busy. Trying to find a really great and thoughtful gift for someone can be time-consuming, especially if you don’t really know much about babies or being a new parent. So, our target customer is really that person that wants to give a gift that is thoughtful, useful and unique, but also easy and convenient.

Q: Is there a ‘hero’ product in the lineup? If so, which one and what makes it so popular?

A: Speaking of unique gifts, absolutely! It is our postpartum gift bundle. Its popularity seems to be because people love being able to get something that is just for mom. It also seems they get a kick out of sending a gift that is all about the vagina — the greeting messages that are included with these gift bundles are truly hysterical! More than that, I think people appreciate that the postpartum gift bundle really recognizes a part of motherhood that is so often overlooked or minimized, and for which a new mom is often somewhat unprepared.

Q: What is the price range for your products?

A: Most of our gift bundles are around the $100 mark and include free shipping within Canada. There is also the option to build your own gift bundle or to customize your gift bundle, so there is choice available to meet individual preferences and budgets.

Q: And, lastly, where can people check them out?

A: You can check us out at basicbabyco.com.
